Runic Wisdom for the Modern Mind

Algiz ᛉ: Expecto Patronum

Personally, this started out as a tough day for me, and I feel blessed to have pulled the rune for protection and higher-self : Algiz ᛉ. There are several interpretations of what the shape represents. I’ve heard elk sedge (a plant with spikes), antlers, and outstretched arms. This rune is often worn as a pendant for protection, and as such, it was my first interaction with runes as a child.

While the English words for defense (rune: Thurisaz ᚦ) and protection (rune: Algiz ᛉ) sound similar in meaning. We have to consider the feelings behind each to understand. Defense is an act; where protection is a state of being. When the wind is howling, the walls are popping, and rain is pelting the windows, how grateful are you that you are protected in your home? Likewise, I like to think of a child safe in their parents’ bed. Nightmares rarely follow a child into their parent’s embrace.

Because of a stressful situation today, I called out for protection many times. On one hand, this situation was causing me distress and on the other, I was not in any physical danger. I knew that it was only my anxiety getting the better of me. So I called upon everything and everyone I knew (my Higher Power, ancestors, higher self, spirit guides…anyone) to entrust myself to their care and take away my fear. I asked that they gain control, and I surrendered mine. The interpretation of outstretched hands came to mind.

From the heart, surrendering is so difficult for me. I subscribe to the belief that our thoughts and feelings control the world around us. When someone adopts that mindset, it’s too easy to think that you’ve got it all in control. In reality, sometimes we have to give up control and trust in the Universe/God(s)/Higher Power to feel that ultimate sense of protection.

In my experience, the more in control I think I am, the less things go well. When I let go, magic happens. Trust that you’re being carried through the tough times. Trust that all is being bent towards your favor (even when it looks impossible). This is protection.

The image of antlers to me always brings up the scenes in Harry Potter when Harry, in distress, calls on his patronus (protector). Harry’s patronus manifests as a large stag with a beautiful set of antlers and energetically charges at the latest threat. Imagine yourself with antlers atop your head. Take a moment to envision yourself as a buck roaming with your bachelor group. Think of the power and invincibility you may feel as part of that herd. That feeling eliminates the smaller anxieties and lets you lean on others for protection. Who can you lean on? Give thanks for them.

Sometimes, protection is not always possible. You may come into situations feeling very vulnerable. Recognize that feeling quickly. Stags lose their antlers every year, and it takes months to regrow fully. During that time, the nerve endings can be sensitive. This is not the time to start a conflict. When times are vulnerable, consider your actions wisely. Call upon your higher power(s), and surrender your control. It’s not the time to take on the fight yourself.

What are the areas in your life that require surrendering to a power greater than yourself, versus control?

Finally, do what you can to assist your higher power by helping to heal and comfort your inner child. It’s most often that when you’re feeling anxious or scared, it’s your inner child that is surfacing. Provide yourself with protection by being your own parent. Wrap yourself in the warmth of your adult embrace and put your inner child’s fears to rest.
