Dagaz ᛞ: The Signs of Spring

Spring has sprung, as they say! Colorful blossoms adorn the trees, green blades of glass pierce the ground, and the temperature is noncommittal. Let’s not get started on the sweet wafts of promised red eyes and sniffles. With the assurance of longer days and summer ahead, we can only look back at the darkness and chill of winter in the rearview mirror.

The upcoming vernal equinox (the date when day and night are equal) symbolizes the transition from darkness to light. This time of transition reminds me of walking out of the depths of a dense forest and moving ever so closer to the light in the meadow. It’s the power of Dagaz ᛞ (the impending day/daylight) illuminating the path of discovery and out of the woods.

There were signs all along that spring was coming. It didn’t appear out of nowhere. In North Texas, it was that first blooming of a tulip tree, the green shoots of daffodils, then the burst of white in a Bradford pear, followed by the purples and pinks of the redbuds and azaleas. There were other sensory changes, too. Fragrances, shifting winds, temperature roller coasters, and the craving for lighter and brighter foods.

Dagaz is enlightening. It’s what clarifies and brightens your path. Think back to your greatest achievements or memorable moments of your life. Were there signs that lit the way towards your impending success? Maybe it’s easier to think about the potholes and debris that led to an unpleasant outcome. Either way, there were signs that your intuition picked up on.

What are you picking up on now? Is there something nagging at your focus? Were you recently surprised by a new connection? Find and recognize the “clicks” of a plan coming together. Trust your gut when you feel a sinking feeling inside.

With the universal symbols of rebirth in full swing, take this time to use the signs of spring, both past and expectant, to analyze the signs in your own life. Cast off the shadows. See them in the light. These are the signs illuminating an outcome.
